Document Details : Title: Sixteenth Century Justice in Action Subtitle: The Case of Isabel López Author(s): LEVINE-MELAMMED, Renée Journal: Revue des Études Juives Volume: 145 Issue: 1-2 Date: janvier-juin 1986 Pages: 51-73 DOI: 10.2143/REJ.145.1.2012957 Abstract : Isabel López, a New Christian from the village of Cogolludo, was accused of judaizing by the Spanish Inquisition. Her trial, which lasted from 1516-1518, offers a great deal of insight regarding the legal process of the Holy Tribunal and, in particular, the medieval application of justice. Isabel and her family desperately attempted to invalidate the testimonies of the unnamed witnesses for the prosecution. Their lack of success does not necessarily prove that she was a crypto-Jew, but rather that the concept of medieval justice which prevailed in the sixteenth century must be properly understood in its context. |
