B.C.) extensive attention is paid to the theory of the syllable (G.G. I 1, 16-22). First, in ch. 7, the syllable itself is defined. In the two following chapters the grammarian enumerates the cases when a syllable is respectively long (ch. 8) or short (ch. 9). Then (ch. 10) the grammarian discusses the “common” syllables. This section comprises three cases in which syllables, which according to the rules listed in chapters 8 and 9 should be long or short respectively, can be used differently by the poets. |
