Abstract :
The setting of the 'Tale of the Eloquent Peasant' has lead to an assumption that the date of composition lay within the Heracleopolitan period, based on a simplistic correlation of literature and history. Recent redatings are reviewed with a general theoretical discussion, and possible specific evidence is considered, including an apparent allusion to the titulary of Senwosret II. The manuscript tradition is not suggestive of a long period of transmission between the composition and the copies from the second half of the 12th dynasty and the early 13th dynasty. In such matters a combination of various factors, viewed within a literary context, is most persuasive, and in the case of the 'Tale of the Eloquent Peasant' the balance of evidence supports a mid-late 12th dynasty date.
