She played a significant part in the beginnings and development of this genre in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, little is known about her life. Possibly she is the same person as the “Clara Peeters” who was baptized on 15 May 1594 in the Walburga church in Antwerp, the daughter of Jean Peeters. If this identification is correct, she must have been a precocious talent: her earliest dated works are from 1607! However, it was not unusual in the 16th and 17th century for woman painters to give evidence of their talents at a very young age. |
