Abstract :
After an extended internal reflection process, the French bishops issued in November 2002 a short message followed by “eleven orientation points” addressed to both young couples preparing for marriage and those responsible for marriage ministry. Rather than concentrating on doctrinal aspects such as how much faith is required for entering into a Christian marriage, the bishops acknowledge the importance of the church’s marriage preparation programs also for those couples who are not committed Christians. Paul De Clerck, professor of pastoral theology and liturgy at the Institut Catholique in Paris, sees these directives in keeping with the pastoral motto of proposer la foi (proposing the faith in today’s society) adopted earlier by the French church.
