Abstract :
In my study of the share of Ptolemy IX Soter II and Ptolemy X Alexander I in the construction and decoration of the temple of Edfu, I argued that the exterior of the girdle wall was decorated under Ptolemy X, including the west wall. I suggested that the names of Ptolemy IX filling the cartouches on this wall were inscribed early in his second reign, which lasted from 88 to 80 BC. I further suggested that the representations of a queen occurring on the west wall were originally intended to portray Berenice III, Ptolemy X’s wife and his coregent from 101 BC onwards, but were subsequently identified as Cleopatra II, Ptolemy IX’s mother and his coregent during his first reign (116-107 BC). Since Cleopatra II died in 107 BC or thereabout, these depictions should be regarded as posthumous representations of the queen.
