Abstract :
The long lost Sermoenen op Cantica of Frans Vervoort OFM († 1555) have been found in ms. Leiden, UB, BPL48E, originating from the ‘Groot Begijnhof’ in Mechelen. As the manuscript states that these sermons were delivered by Anthonis vander Voerde — priest of the same beguinage from 1524 to 1551 — the fact that the author was Frans Vervoort remained in the dark.
There is reason to believe that all the other texts in this manuscript were also adapted, written or compiled by Frans Vervoort.
Two more manuscripts testify to the intense preaching activity at the Groot Begijnhof in Mechelen. They project an image of a lively and powerful ascetic, religious culture in the spirit of the Counter Reformation.
