Abstract :

The classic structural chess-model likens language to a chessboard, where no square can admit more than one piece. In accordance with this theory, variation has only been described as a diachronic and/or diatopic phenomenon: any variation would imply that the whole chessboard has been replaced. The case of the Alsatian translative (article-deictic) suggests an alternative model: the variation-cinesis, i.e. the “enlarged square”, which enables us to describe variations within the synchrony of one linguistic system.
