Abstract :

Small in volume, Karcevski's work is both coherent and incomplete. It is coherent with regard to its subject — the contemporary Russian language — and its method — each question is replaced in the theoretical perspective which gives it its full meaning. It is incomplete insofar as each piece of work fits into an overall architecture, the plan for what Jakobson called a “summa linguistica”. The present paper recalls some basic aspects of Karcevski's thought: asymmetry of the linguistic sign; use of the TT' syntagm of the Geneva School; new classification of Russian verbs; concept of productivity; innovative views on verbal prefixation; word order and functional sentence perspective; discovery of the internal dialogical structure in compound sentences; analysis of sentence intonation; definition of the speaker's four attitudes toward “things”. In the second part of the paper, Karcevski's theory on the exclamatory origin of coordinating conjunctions and the resultant distinction between “external” and “internal” conjunctions are applied to the conjunction “a”. The study finally focuses on the conjunction “xotja” and brings out the specificity of concessive clauses, showing in the process the differences between “xotja” and its variants, commonly considered synonymous.
