It is well known that Syria has played a key role in the world’s cultural history: its major civilisations have greatly contributed to the cultural heritage of humanity. Thus, the ARAM conference on Palmyra is by no means just a conference about a glorious Syrian city of the past. It is a conference about a city which played an important role in ancient times and which has, in consequence, contributed greatly to our universal cultural heritage. Our meeting today of people of different nationalities and from diverse countries shows clearly that the Syrian cultural heritage does not belong only to Syrians, but that it is also at the service of humanity for the enhancement of knowledge and science...
