Document Details : Title: The Disturbed Relations between the Russian Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Church Author(s): VAN DEN BERCKEN, Wil Journal: Journal of Eastern Christian Studies Volume: 54 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2002 Pages: 227-243 DOI: 10.2143/JECS.54.3.1075 Abstract : This survey of recent developments in the Orthodox Church in Russia is wholly devoted to the problematic relationship between the Russian Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Church. First the author analyses the ecumenical declaration of the Russian Orthodox Council of Bishops of 2000 with regard to the Roman Catholic Church. Then he discusses non-theological factors in the relation between Moscow and Rome. Finally he comments on the latest problems between Orthodoxy and Catholicism in Russia and the Ukraine, which has further disturbed the relations between the two churches. Although the ecumenical declaration was issued before the recent problems between the Orthodox and the Catholic Church, it is an interesting indicator for the Russian Orthodox view of the Roman Catholic Church as a partner in ecumenical dialogue. |
