A characteristic image on CT abdomen
A 66-year-old man is described with slightly elevated serum ALT levels, attributed to liver steatosis. A CT scan of the abdomen disclosed the typical image of a carcinoid tumor with a soft tissue mass containing coarse calcifications and spiculations radiating into the adjacent mesenteric fat, characteristic of a desmoplastic response.
During subsequent operation the carcinoid tumor was removed; 4 liver metastases were resected or treated by radiofrequency ablation. Five years after the initial diagnosis, the patient remains asymptomatic and in good condition.
