Mucoid aneurysm of the ascending aorta
Transoesophageal echocardiography is an invaluable technique for the first, rapid and bedside evaluation of any suspected thoracic aortic pathology. Two usually discussed disease states of the aorta are atherosclerosis and aortic dissection. A sometimes reported disease of the aorta is an infection with subsequent intimo-medial mucoid degeneration of the arterial wall.
In this report, we describe the diagnosis and management of a mycotic aneurysm of the ascending aorta and aortic arch. The clinical picture and the echocardiographic images are related to the literature and therapeutic guidelines are discussed.
