Abstract :
Such was the assessment of John Henry Newman of the theological topography of his time. In his estimation, theologians could not and would not, however, grope blindly in the mist for very long. 'They cannot go on forever standing on one leg, or sitting without a chair, or walking with their legs tied, or grazing, like Tityrus’s stags, on the air.' This essay explores the negotiation of an impasse in Anglican theological discourse that emerged after the reformations of the sixteenth century resolved in light of the development of an interpretive key to Newman’s work that might be termed his ‘parabolic imperative.’
