Abstract :
John Coleman and Gregory Baum have pointed to Catholic social teaching as an area of theology that 'represents a distinctively evolving tradition, open to history and data. ... It is an arena, pre-eminently, of the development of doctrine.' Particularly since the Second Vatican Council, the language of social sin has gained increasing prominence within that body of teaching, prompting many commentators to regard it as a new theological category. Can magisterial appropriation of the language of social sin be considered a development of doctrine, as Baum has suggested?
