La seconde navigation possède bien une méthode d’explication spécifique,qui contraste avec la méthode mise en place lors de la première navigation, c’est-à-dire avec une méthode qui consiste à expliquer empiriquement la cause des réalités sensibles. La méthode employée au cours de la seconde navigation consiste à expliquer eidétiquement la cause des réalités sensibles, et elle se fonde dans une hypothèse explicative non démonstrative (101d2-4). Quant aux hypothèses émises en 100ab (déclaratives) et celles proposées en 101d8 (justificatives), elles ne concernent pas la seconde navigation. The aim of this study is to clarify the relations which exist between the method developed by Socrates himself in the course of his second voyage (Phaedo 99d-102a), the three hypothetical logoi referred to in this passage (100a3, 100 b4-6 and 101d8) and the three occurrences of the term “hypothesis” (101d2-3, d4 and d7), with a view to discovering the meaning of the usual expression “method of hypotheses”. The second voyage has undoubtedly a specific method of explanation, which contrasts with the method adopted during the first voyage, i.e. the method which consists in explaining empirically the cause of sensible realities. The method used during the second voyage consists in explaining eidetically the cause of sensible realities, and it is based on a nondemonstrative explanatory hypothesis (101d2-4). As for the (declaratory) hypotheses expressed in 100ab and those proposed in 101d8 (which are justificatory), they do not concern the second voyage (Transl. by J. Dudley). |
