Document Details : Title: Ambrose vs. Symmachus Subtitle: Christians and Pagans in AD 384 Author(s): EVENEPOEL, W. Journal: Ancient Society Volume: 29 Date: 1998-1999 Pages: 283-306 DOI: 10.2143/AS.29.0.630061 Abstract : The years 303-311 saw the last general persecution of Christians within the Roman Empire. With the so-called Edict of Milan of 313 the emperors Constantine the Great and Licinius granted Christianity the right to exist, and Constantius II already issued far-reaching anti-pagan legislation. On the occasion of a visit by Constantius II to Rome in 357 the ara Victoriae was even removed from the Senate. It must be remembered that this altar, placed in the Senate by the emperor Augustus, was an important symbol of the close relationship between the Roman state and the traditional pagan cult. |
