Il apparaît comme le donné originel (naturel aussi bien que social) d’un être humain ainsi déterminé par des éléments quasi objectifs; ceci constitue déjà une unicité. Mais le caractère est encore unique par l’acte réflexif de saisie de soi, par laquelle s’effectue l’ipséité d’un être singulier. Pourtant, tout sujet étant situé dans le monde et dans une histoire, seule une communauté rend possible cette réalisation de soi comme existence en caractère. Character is the primary notion in ethics. It appears as the original given (both natural and social) in a human being who is determined in this way by quasi-objective elements; this already constitutes a unicity. But the character is unique again by the reflexive act of grasping of self, by means of which the ipseity of a singular being is effectuated. However, as any subject is situated in the world and in history, only a community makes possible this realisation of self as existence in character. (Transl. by J. Dudley). |
