Abstract :

This article seeks to show the importance of the concept of the sovereign good in Kant's ethics. Against those who maintain that this concept is foreign to Kant's ethics, that it represents a problematic, even dangerous, addition to this doctrine, the author shows, on the contrary, that it corresponds to rational and psychological necessities inherent in the system. In order to refute the principal objections raised in regard to the importance and pertinence of the sovereign good in Kant, the author insists on the interested structure of pure reason, the first and superior interest of which is precisely the practical interest for the sovereign good, then on a distinction which the author holds to be capital between two kinds of sovereign good, an immanent sovereign good and a transcendent sovereign good, to which correspond two kinds of duties, that of realising the sovereign good and that of promoting it.
