Document Details : Title: Notes on the Autochtonous Religions of Southeast Asia Author(s): KNAPPERT, J. Journal: Orientalia Lovaniensia Periodica Volume: 30 Date: 1999 Pages: 189-214 DOI: 10.2143/OLP.30.0.583582 Abstract : The following article is an attempt at summarising the extensive and complex subject of the religions of the Southeast Asian peoples as they were before the advent of Buddhism. Some discussion of the historical evolution will be, I trust, to the readers’ advantage. Three major religions have advanced into Southeast Asia from India during the past three millennia, and two still dominate the area: Buddhism and Islam. We should mention that in the Philippines, a country that is occasionally drawn into the discussion for comparative reasons, Christianity now dominates. |
