Journal: Orientalia Lovaniensia Periodica Volume: 30 Date: 1999 Pages: 97-112 DOI: 10.2143/OLP.30.0.583578 Abstract : In this article, a comparative study will be made between the works of three medieval writers concerning Šağarat ad-Durr, sultana of Egypt from 1250 until 1257. The three authors in question are Abū l-Fidā’ in his work al-Muẖtaṣar fi Aẖbar al-Bašar, Taqī ad-Dīn al-Maqrīzī in his work as-Sulūk li ma‘rifat duwal al-mulūk and Abul-Maḥasin b. Taġrī Birdī in his an-Nuğūm az-zāhira fi mulūk Miṣr wa l-Qāhira. By way of introduction, a brief historical outline of the period 1250-1257, in which Šağarat ad-Durr played an important role, will be drawn. Subsequently each of the three authors will be treated separately. A brief biography will be given, followed by a systematic survey of this part of the text that deals with the period, the subject of this article. This will be followed by remarks on the similarities and differences in the texts. |
