Document Details : Title: Swahili Islam Author(s): KNAPPERT, J. Journal: Orientalia Lovaniensia Periodica Volume: 27 Date: 1997 Pages: 181-206 DOI: 10.2143/OLP.27.0.583544 Abstract : Orthodox Muslim scholars will deny that there is such a thing as Swahili Islam or Somali Islam, or Indian or Indonesian Islam. “The worship of the One God is one. There is only the Islam of the Arabic Koran and the Hadith (tradition)”, they will say, and most Muslims agree. If one then asks about Iran, the reaction is either: “They practise the same Islam”, or: “They are wandering in error: because they worship Husayn they are polytheists and sinners”. |
