He became a Jesuit in 1614. He was a professor of rhetoric, poetry, philosophy and theology, first in Parma, afterwards in Bologna. He specialized in improving geography, chronology and astronomy. After he had been appointed study prefect in Parma, he entirely applied himself to his work. Riccioli is not in the first place important for his own discoveries, but for the care with which he passed on those of others. Riccioli's works have a fixed repertory: in the beginning of each chapter we find an extensive list of all authors who have written about the subject that will be dealt with including the bibliographic references. The “Almagestum novum, Astronomiam veterem novamque continens, observationibus aliorum et propriis novisque theorematibus, problematibus, ac tabulis promotam” was published in Bononiae in 1653 (2 volumes in folio). Riccioli was much respected by his contemporaries and distinguished scientists. |
