Abstract :
It is now widely accepted that eastern wines held an important place in Mediterranean trade during Late Antiquity. The most famous of these wines, those that feature prominently in texts, are those from Palestine, specifically the vintages of Gaza and Ascalon. Less apparent in the literary sources are wines from elsewhere in the eastern provinces. Amongst these are vintages produced in Cilicia, which, it is argued below, played a significant role in the wine trade. From texts we can actually glean something of the characteristics of Cilician wine, and from archaeological remains we are able to say something further (but still not nearly enough) about the production and distribution of Cilician wines. But first, we begin with the general situation of CiliciaIsauria in Late Antiquity.
