Recent developments in sociology of law focusing on Japan have pointed in the direction of the presence of a state controlled rather than a judicially driven social change here. The author uses the sociology of law as method in the present study. The aim is to provide an insight into the function and implication of the farm tenancy conciliation system (kosaku chôtei seido): the main legal measure taken by the Japanese government to cope with the disputes which were undermining the social fabric between 1924 and 1938. |
