Abstract :
The geographical name Libanon appears in the Egyptian language as the loan-word rmnn, from the New Kingdom onwards. The author has found indications that this word was already present in the Egyptian language since the ‘Zeit der Regionen’ (First Intermediate Period). The relevant texts in this research are known to us through copies dating to the New Kingdom, but their composition must date back to the First Intermediate Period. It is argued that loan-word rmnn that must have stood in the original composition was no longer recognised as such by the New Kingdom scribes, and reinterpreted by them as the Egyptian preposition r-mn-m. The content of the texts makes however better sense if ‘Libanon’ is read in stead of the preposition. The fact that Libanon already appears in these FIP texts has implications for our image of the geographical knowledge of the Egyptians of that time.
