Abstract :
Universities are not only institutions for scientific research. They are also centres of excellence for the education of students. Many of these students will be the professionals if tomorrow: engineers, physicians, lawyers, media experts, economists, business administrators, and so forth. Their expertise, knowledge and power will exercise a crucial influence on the quality of life of millions of citizens. The question is whether they will be sufficiently prepared to recognise the ethical aspects of their professional decisions and to understand the social consequences of their work. A university prepares them to become experts in a very limited field, to find technical solutions to specific problems. But often they do not learn how to resolve ethical problems or to make themselves into responsible persons.
