Abstract :

This text — initially to be read at the «International Conference on Khmer Studies» held in Phnom Penh in August 1996 — aims at drawing attention to the task that remains to be accomplished in the field of the Sanskrit epigraphy of Cambodia. Not only several Sanskrit inscriptions discovered since the publication of the Inscriptions du Cambodge (1937-1966) of George Cœdès have been awaiting publication, — only 4 or 5 modest texts have been edited and translated over nearly 30 years now, — but the works of Barth, Bergaigne, Finot and Cœdès, however admirable they may be upon the whole, often need correction — a gigantic task that requires, besides an excellent knowledge of the Sanskrit language, a vast Sanskrit culture. Some examples are given in support of this affirmation.
