Abstract :

The article explores the four pillars of the Tamil linguistic tradition: 1) the dichotomy between ilakkiyam («marked») and ilakkaṇam («marker»); 2) the notion of a grammar with five hierarchically arranged levels (aint'ilakaṇam); 3) the notion of muttamiḻ («triune»); 4) the opposition koṭunamiḻ: centamiḻ.
