It is perhaps the growing tendency in recent years to deny the pre-existence assertion in the Philippian hymn that motivates our study. For, if it is true that this trend of thought is already found in some patristic writings (e.g. in those of Ambrosiaster and Pelagius), it is also true that it has received particular attention from about 1965 on. Since the trend cannot be overlooked, this article attempts to offer a few reflections on the topic by recalling some linguistic and syntactic features of the hymn. To meet this purpose, we shall first present exegetical remarks on Phil 2,6 (1). They will be followed by contextual considerations which cover the entire hymn in Phil 2,6-11 (II), and a conclusion (III). |
