Abstract :
The Greek version of Proverbs has not been researched to the same extent as many other books of the Septuagint. As a result many issues have not been adressed properly. One such area is the dating of the book. An unfortunate consequence of this situation is that Septuagint Proverbs (this also applies to the Septuagint in general), has not been extensively utilized in an effort at a better understanding of the Hebrew Bible (Masoretic text). For when we consider that the Septuagint us based on a Hebrew Vorlage which is older than all Masoretic manuscripts, including codex Leningradensis, then the necessity of studying this translation becomes all the more important. It reflects the complexity pf the tradition history of the OT, and in addition it should not be forgotten that the Septuagint represents the earliest exegetical commentary on the Hebrew Bible. It stands to reason that dating plays a fundamental role in these issues.
I shall address the problem as formulated in the following manner. For the sake of a historical perspective. I shall first of all discuss cursorily the various views that have been put forward. Secondly, I shall endeavour to investigate an avenue which may be helpful in situating the Greek version of the Proverbs historically.
