Abstract :
In two earlier articles, I proposed that Luke's account of the trials of Jesus before the religious leaders and Pilate are dependent upon that found in Mark and that there is no need to appeal to another Passion source in addition to Mark's narrative. In thsi essay I intend to investigate the relationship between the Johannine account of Jesus before Annas and the Markan account of the Sanhedrin trial. Although most exegetes contend that the Fourth Gospel is not directly dependent upon the synoptics, I will argue that, in this instance, the Fourth Evangelist is dependent upon the Markan account. Therefore, even if the Evangelist had no other information, e.g., regarding Annas, there is no need to appeal t a continuous, non-Markan Passion source as most authors have done.
This essay begins with a review of the problems presented by the Johannine account of Jesus before Annas and some solutions proposed to solve them. It concludes by investigating the relationship of this account and the Markan report of the trial before the Sanhedrin.
