Document Details : Title: Cloning and Cloning Technologies Subtitle: The Case for Nuclear Replacement Author(s): WILSON, William Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 24 Issue: 1 Date: spring 1999 Pages: 72-75 DOI: 10.2143/LS.24.1.542134 Abstract : In January of 1998, two British government bodies, the Human Genetics Advisory Committee (HGAC) and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), published jointly a public consultation document entitled Cloning Issues in Reproduction, Science and Medicine. Although the intended period of consultation is now over (responses were required by 30th April 1998), the document is still well worth reading. For, in only eleven A4 pages it provides a great deal of clear, detailed, and concise information pertinent to the many issues surrounding cloning. This information includes a useful glossary of relevant technical terms, informative precises of the history, current legality, and techniques of cloning, and an indication of some of its potential benefits and pitfalls. Above all, the document suggests a helpful framework of six questions around which thought might be focused. |
