Abstract :
This offering to Klaus Schippmann celebrates his valuable contribution to our knowledge of Iranian fire sanctuaries by presenting the depiction of a fire ceremony, performed outdoors, in a place distant from Iran, and representing the broad reach of Greater Iranian culture and religion. While several depictions of fire ceremonies are known from pre-Islamic Central Asia, as well as one from China, all to be cited later, the richly detailed portrayal of this ceremony, which I believe is part of the Zoroastrian funerary ritual, is singular.
