Abstract :
SEEBER's (2001) experiment on intonation and anticipation in simultaneous interpreting revealed interpreters to anticipate verbs more quickly and more accurately when interpreting a digitally monotized text. A scrutiny of the original experimental design identified prosodic deterioration as a potential confounding variable. Consequently, a follow-up experiment was designed using shadowing speed and accuracy as indicators of source text comprehension. The results did not indicate a strong causal relation between prosodic deterioration and source text comprehension.
