Polytheism is well known for its tolerance whereas monotheism is well known for its intolerance. But how deeply rooted are tolerance and intolerance in polytheism and monotheism respectively? That shall be my main question. In order to answer it and pursue my aim, I shall turn to the history of religions by discussing how polytheism and monotheism arose historically and I shall draw from the phenomenological interest in its subjective meaning by considering what is at stake existentially speaking when people embrace polytheism or monotheism. |
