Abstract :
Op maandag 29 november 1999, gaf Michel Sabbah op uitnodiging van het Centrum voor Vredesethiek (Faculteit Godgeleerdheid, K.U.Leuven) in het kader van de reeks `Wetenschap en ethiek' in de Promotiezaal een lezing met de titel: Jerusalem: City of Peace?

Michel Sabbah werd geboren op 19 maart 1933 in Nazareth. Na zijn studies aan het seminarie van het Latijnse Patriarchaat in Beit Jala (Bethlehem), werd hij op 29 juni 1955 tot priester gewijd te Nazareth. Vanaf 1959 studeerde hij Arabische filologie aan de St-Jozef Universiteit van Beyrouth (Libanon). In 1964 werd hij verantwoordelijk voor de jeugd binnen het bisdom van het Latijnse Patriarchaat van Jeruzalem. In 1968 werd hij professor in de Arabistiek en Islamkunde in Djibouti, Afrika. In 1973 verwierf hij aan de Sorbonne in Parijs de titel van doctor in de Arabische filologie. In 1980 werd hij rector van de universiteit van Bethlehem. Sinds 1987 is hij Latijnse Patriarch van Jeruzalem. Sabbah is ook lid van de `Assembly of Catholic Patriarchs of Orient' en tot voor kort was hij voorzitter van de Council of Churches voor het Midden-Oosten. Hij schreef vier pastorale brieven: Faith in the Holy Land (1988), Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem: on the Intifada and the Church and Christians' Voice (1990), On Fr. Yousef Tannous: Founder of the Rosary Sisters (1991), Lire la Bible au Pays de la Bible (1993).
