Abstract :
The essay investigates the parameters of national identity through the use of gender symbolism in a case study of the German stigmatic Therese Neumann (1898-1962) and her circle during the Nazi regime. Special emphasis is placed on the issue of Catholic rural resistance to Nazi attacks against local priests and Catholic devotional practice, and the limits and possibilities of female authority as defined by mystical phenomena and an intensely somaticized spirituality.
