Abstract :
Julian of Norwich was heir to a diversity of teachings of Redemption. Dominant among these in Julian's time was the twelfth-century theology of Anselm of Canterbury. This fact has led commentators to look for likenesses between the meaning of salvation as expressed by Anselm and Julian. HOwever, there are crucial differences in their teachings, as revealed in a close study of Julian's language and its nuances (as transmitted in the Sloane1 edition), when she writes of salvation, Julian is closer to the tought of the early Christian writers than she is to Anselm's in her mysterical understanding of the mystery of Redemption.
