Journal: Studies in Spirituality Volume: 14 Date: 2004 Pages: 153-170 DOI: 10.2143/SIS.14.0.505192 Abstract : Given the complete absence of external evidence, not much is known about the vita exterior of Mechthild of Magdeburg. Some allusions in her text and its Latin translations,and a marginal note, that’s all from which the relevant conclusions have been drawn. Even that she dwelled at Magdeburg is nothing but an albeit reasonable if unprovable speculation. Therefore, the present paper tries to shed some light on her possible course of life by assembling dates from comparable vitae of rather neglected but better documented contemporary German women mystics. Such comparisons will help to understand better Mechthild’s living conditions. |
