Journal: Persica Volume: 19 Date: 2003 Pages: 69-105 DOI: 10.2143/PERS.19.1.505105 Abstract : Royal Ilkhanid illustrated manuscripts, produced from c.1290-c.1340, during the conversion of this Mongol dynasty to Islam, encapsulate the so to speak multi-dimensional aspects of the empire, located as it was between the West and the East. They function as 'documentary films' of the Mongol polity, in a way unprecedented in Islamic art. In particular, the illustrations of these manuscripts often exhibit many aspect of East Asian cultures which impacted on the Ilkhanids. These paintings can expound us to the idiosyncratic identity of the Mongols in the Islamic world more effectively than words; they give a visual answer to the quest for the elusive identity of the Ilkhinads. |
