What follows is a typical example of these merging patterns and correlations: Yiddish in South Africa and its little-known literary production. It is precisely the non-European aspect wwhich makes Yiddish even more interesting, a language which in itself is exciting because of its hybrid character. Not only has Yiddish acquired the function of ancestral language, a language of memory; it has also become a language of discovery which absorbs new aspects, new elements, reflecting the South African experience. |
