Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 75 Issue: 1 Date: April 1999 Pages: 104-122 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.75.1.504751 Abstract : Both Frans Neirynck and Timothy A. Friedrichsen have done me the favor of taking my arguments for subsidiary influence of Matthew on Luke (as a supplement to the Mark-Q hypothesis) so seriously as to attempt refutations. Those arguments cited the presence of Matthean foreign bodies in Luke – elements that suit Matthean but not Lukan style and emphasis among agreements of Luke with Matthew against Mark – and appeared first in my commentary on Matthew, then in collected and more highly developed form in a contribution to Neirynck's Festschrift. He responded with a contribution to Michael D. Goulder's Festschrift. That contribution critiqued in particular my treatment of Lk 10,25-28. I issued a rejoinder, Neirynck a surrejoinder, and private correspondence between him and me followed. Now Friedrichsen has critiqued in particular my treatment of Lk 9,22. Following is an argument to the effect that despite yeomanly efforts, Neirynck and Friedrichsen have not succeeded in exorcising Matthean foreign bodies (or should I say “foreign spirits”?) from Luke 9,22; 10,25-28. |
