Abstract :
This paper asks about the origin of certain specific religious impulses and institutional patterns in Manichaeism. It proceeds from the insight, established since the decipherment of the Greek biography of Mani, that Mani's basic religious education was in an Elchasaite Christian Community. Thus, to explain the central features of teh institutional formation of Manichaeism, this paper looks to Mai's specific religious background in early Aramaic-speaking Christianity.
