In the first place, it aims to draw the attention of contemporary theologians once again to Jaspers’ philosophy of religion, which has been neglected in recent decades. Secondly, it seeks to provide a survey of the interesting theological debates provoked by his thought. These were especially prominent in the period between the end of the Second World War and the years immediately following Jaspers’ death in 1969. The present contribution makes a distinction between commentaries that operate within a well-defined Thomistic framework, those in which the background is less well-defined but which display a more explicitly welcoming attitude towards modernity, and those which engage with Jaspers from a distinctive standpoint. The latter include Paul Ricœur, who explored Jaspers’ thought intensively during the Second World War. Thirdly, we hope to defend the view that all of these commentaries are relevant in the light of the contemporary debate concerning pluralism. Most of the arguments called upon in the theological critiques of Jaspers have a place mutatis mutandis in the contemporary discussions about the pluralist theology of religions. |
