Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 13 Issue: 1 Date: 2003 Pages: 86-105 DOI: 10.2143/SID.13.1.504438 Abstract : The author discusses the understanding of the doctrine of the Trinity in the context of the Indonesian culture, as characterized by Islam and tribal religions. The problem addressed in the article is how Trinity, which is suspected of being polytheistic, confronts tribal religions that are also polytheistic. How do we explain to those with a background of tribal religion that Christianity is different from tribal religion? Does the doctrine of the Trinity not remind people of their roots in tribal religion? For it is precisely in tribal religion that we also see a belief similar to the Trinity, at least in the structure of belief concerning divinities. The author discusses not just the contents, but also the way to communicate the doctrine of the Trinity. |
