La mise en lumière de la provenance pythagoricienne du concept de summetria nous amène à mieux comprendre la signification cosmo-théologique de cette communion rationnelle de tous les êtres — signification que Platon reprend à son compte dans une nouvelle perspective métaphysique. En somme, Platon propose à la fois un rébus, une sorte de jeu mathématique, en vue de sélectionner les Gardiens, et une nouvelle conception philosophique des cycles cosmo-théologiques. En dernière analyse, l’interprétation proposée pourra déboucher sur une nouvelle hypothèse concernant le nombre parfait de la génération divine. The aim of this study is to proceed to associate the mathematical concept of summetria, introduced by Plato in Book VII of the Republic, and the puzzle of the Numbers of the generation of the gods and men in Book VIII. The emphasis on the Pythagorean origin of the concept of summetria makes it possible for us to understand better the cosmic-theological meaning of this rational communion of all beings, a meaning which Plato takes over within a new metaphysical perspective. In brief, Plato proposes both a puzzle, a kind of mathematical game, in order to select the Guardians, and a new philosophical conception of cosmic-theological cycles. In the final analysis the interpretation proposed will lead to a new hypothesis concerning the perfect number of divine generation. (Transl. by J. Dudley). |
