Il occupe une place de choix dans l’économie de l’ouvrage et s’avère particulièrement représentatif de l’utilisation des discours dans La Guerre juive et de la fonction qu’on peut leur attribuer. Cette étude se propose d’abord d’analyser les sources de ce vaste tableau des conquêtes romaines; d’autre part elle souhaite mettre en lumière l’utilisation rhétorique de ces sources et le caractère artificiel de cette harangue. Il s’agit bien d’un commentaire qui s’ajoute au récit et grâce auquel Josèphe, soucieux de défendre ses choix personnels et sa vision des événements (et de l’Histoire), met en évidence l’universalité de la domination romaine et l’isolement des Juifs dans la politique internationale. The speech of the king Agrippa II in the second book of the Josephus Flavius’ Jewish War is one of the most remarkable excerpt of the Jewish historian. It has a place of choice in the whole work and gives us information about the use of speeches in The Jewish War and their function. This contribution analyses first sources of this extensive picture of the Roman Empire, and next brings out the rhetoric use of this sources and the fictious nature of this harangue. It is indeed a commentary which is added to the narrative in order to underline the universality of the Roman Power and the isolation of the Jews in the international politics: in this way Josephus Flavius endeavours to defend his personal choices and his vision of events (and of History). |
