Document Details : Title: 'Adieu, o alderschoonste Rosiere'. Afscheid van vrouwe Rhetorica Author(s): MOSER, Nelleke Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 43 Issue: 3 Date: 2001 Pages: 224-233 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.43.3.390 Abstract : This article proposes an analysis of the morality play Het saet van Rhetorica (‘The Seed of Rhetoric’), written by the Gouda rhetorician Michiel Reygersz., at the end of the sixteenth century. It is a play about the value and status of the rhetorician’s art. The play shows the beneficial influence of Rhetoric in a degenerate world; rhetoric is clearly to be taken as a symbol of God’s Word, ‘that makes good rhetoricians’. In stressing this, the play positions itself in a contemporary debate about the meaning and contents of rhetoric, rejecting a limited, purely ‘technical’ view on the art. |
