The paths of the principal contributors began to diverge and August Vermeylen, the founding editor who continued to set the journal’s course, had begun to conform to society. His old friend Mesnil, one of the more active collaborators, had remained an anarchist and opposed the sneaking bourgeois mentality. When Vermeylen raised ethical objections to Mesnil’s erotic novel ‘Wellust’ [Lust], he set off a conflict that ended in verbal abuse. The death throes of the magazine were painful. The last issue appeared half a year too late, without ‘Wellust’. The protagonists were left with a severe hang-over. Still, a successor to Van Nu en Straks appeared soon after: Vlaanderen, a journal which sported a far less ambitious programme and which had no room for Mesnil. |
